‘Coaching’ in the Workplace

In this week's PACT HR blog we explore what a 'Coaching' session is and how this really can be implemented throughout the workplace, to bolster the morale and capabilities of your team.

The School Business Manager – A Vital Asset

During a recent ‘Adopting a Coaching Approach in the Workplace’ session, I was asked “what actually happens during a coaching session?” and this led me to consider the common misconceptions around coaching. I find that often the workshop participants arrive with an idea of what coaching looks like that is very different to the impression they leave with.

The biggest area of confusion tends to be around people understanding the difference between coaching someone and mentoring someone. I of course cover this in the one day workshop however, Carol Wilson – International Speaker and Executive Coach and CEO – Culture at Work explains this really well in the following YouTube video.

Put simply; in a coaching relationship the coach guides the individual to break down and uncover the issues in order to get to the root of the problem. The coach is there to support, listen, challenge and probe.

Working in the learning and professional development arena for 15-years I have learned; through the delivery of numerous management development programmes; that coaching is by far one of the most effective methods of:

  • Developing an individual’s capabilities
  • Identifying career aspirations
  • Setting and following personal and career goals & objectives
  • Motivating oneself to achieve aspirations
