The Terms and Conditions of employment for support staff in maintained schools are agreed nationally between the National Joint Council (NJC) for Local Authorities and the relevant Trades Unions. There may also be locally agreed arrangements which are supplementary to the nationally agreed terms and conditions. These local arrangements should be regarded as the basis of normal day to day employer/employee working relationship.

The current document that details the terms and conditions under which support staff in schools are employed  is split into a number of sections each dealing with an individual aspect of the employer/employee relationship. There are three main sections, each split into a number of subsections. As with the Local Terms and Conditions for teachers, although the main document contains various procedures for dealing with issues of discipline and grievance, separate policy documents have been developed and agreed with the local Trades Unions (see separate sections on website).
